What every SAP consultant must know about business functions and activating them

This blog post covers what an enhancement package and business function in SAP is, how one can find, activate and deactivate business functions in SAP. Also covered are a few important points while working with business functions in SAP.

SAP is all about ‘Standard’ and ‘Custom’. And so much custom actually depends upon the standard because you cannot afford to build everything from scratch. If building everything from scratch was the case, why would SAP exist?

Before one can understand the concept of business functions, one must know what enhancement packages are. If you don’t know what enhancement package is, read the next para, otherwise you may skip it.

SAP provides all its new developments and enhancements to its applications of SAP Business Suite in an enhancement package. To check the enhancement package, you can open your SAP Logon Pad, click on ‘System’ -> Status and check the value for ‘Component Version’ field.

With business functions, SAP provides new features and enhancements in self-contained units for your existing SAP installations. And these business functions are delivered by SAP in enhancement packages. So, one enhancement package can contain multiple business functions and you can pick and choose which business function you want to activate for your implementation depending upon the requirement.

Ways to activate business function:

  • Using transaction code SFW5 – ‘S’ stands for Switch and ‘FW’ stands for framework.
  • Using the SPRO path (Use transaction code SPRO). For e.g. in SAP CRM, navigate to the following SPRO path:
SAP Customizing IMG -> Activate Business Functions
I have chosen and picked the following points from SAP’s documentation that I found might be helpful:
  • Please note that once you have activated a Business Function, you can no longer cancel the enhancements it makes in the system.
  • The processes that run in the background when you activate a business function need a certain amount of time. This means that you cannot see the changes in the system immediately after you activate the business function. You must also schedule a short downtime of approximately one half hour to an hour in the respective system.
Most common and basic issue encountered:

Issue: I am unable to find a business function in SAP by going to the transaction code SFW5?

Reason: The enhancement package you have may not have the business function. To check the enhancement package you have, you can open your SAP Logon Pad, click on ‘System’ -> Status and check the value for ‘Component Version’ field.
