Overview of Product Master in SAP CRM

This blog post covers what every SAP technical and functional consultant must know about the Product Master in SAP CRM including different types of products, product relationships, set types and attributes, product category and product hierarchy. You'll also learn how we can make the set types and attributes available on the product master.

A Product is an entity which a company sells or purchases. It can be tangible such as a table/chair, or intangible such as maintenance of a car.

To create/open/edit a product, use Tcode: COMMPR01

What are the different types of products?

Material
Service
Warranty
Financing
Financial Service
Intellectual Property

Product Relationship

Just like business partners can have relationships, the products too can be related to each other. For e.g. service parts, accessories etc.

What are set types and attributes?

Set types consist of a set of attributes that are used to define products. For e.g. Color, size etc.
They are stored in the system in the form of tables.
Once a set type is created or changed and it is in use by any product, it cannot be changed afterwards.

Tcode: COMM_ATTRSET

Alternatively, maintenance of set types and attributes can be done from SAP Menu -> Master Data -> Products -> Maintain Set Type and Attributes

How is a product linked to its attributes?
1. First, maintain set types and attributes.
2. The set types need to be assigned to a category.
3. Then, the category needs to be assigned to a product.

Product Category

Categories are used to group together products according to different criteria. The product categories are arranged in category hierarchies.

Tcode: COMM_HIERARCHY

Product Hierarchy

Product Hierarchy describes the structure of the different product categories. The categories within a hierarchy are arranged hierarchically.
All lower level hierarchies inherit the product types and set types from a higher level category.
